How Cleaning Works for Marathon Events in Singapore

Cleaning for a marathon or large-scale running event is very different from normal daily cleaning. The challenge is not simply removing litter. A cleaning team has to support a live event across multiple locations, respond to sudden volumes of waste and complete the final clean-up within the organiser's operating schedule.

For marathon and large-scale running events, cleaning operations may cover the main carnival area, start and finish areas, multiple water points and sections of the running route.

Before the Event

Preparation normally begins before the runners arrive. Cleaning tools, equipment and other required items may need to be delivered and positioned in advance so that the cleaning operation is ready before the event starts.

For major events, this preparation may begin a day earlier. The cleaning team itself is generally deployed before the event, often around two hours before the scheduled start, depending on the organiser's programme and site requirements.

Bins and cleaning resources also need to be positioned according to where waste is expected to be generated rather than simply placing everything at one central location.

During the Event

Once the event begins, the cleaning operation becomes a continuous process.

The main carnival area may require regular litter collection and bin clearing while cleaning teams at water points have a very different challenge: large numbers of runners can arrive within a short period and discard drink containers almost at the same time.

A smaller run may have only several water points, while a half marathon or full marathon can involve many more locations spread over a much longer route.

This means manpower cannot simply remain in one place. Teams and cleaning resources have to be distributed according to the event layout, expected runner flow and actual waste volume.

Managing High-Volume Waste at Water Points

Water points can produce a very high volume of waste within a short time. Ordinary bins alone may not always be convenient when a large wave of runners passes through and many participants need to discard drink containers quickly.

It provides runners with a larger and more convenient disposal area during periods of heavy runner flow, helping the cleaning team manage concentrated waste more effectively.

Protective plastic sheeting can also be laid beneath the disposal area to help prevent spilled drinks from staining the road or ground surface and to make the final clean-up more efficient.

After the Event

For the cleaning team, the busiest part often begins when the event ends.

Once participants leave, litter that has accumulated across the carnival area, water points and event route has to be collected quickly. Bins and disposal areas need to be cleared, spilled drinks and other residues attended to, and the site progressively restored.

This stage requires sufficient manpower and good coordination because several areas may need attention at the same time.

Road Reopening Can Create a Firm Deadline

Where a marathon or running event involves approved road closures, cleaning becomes part of the road-reopening operation.

The cleaning team must clear event-related litter and waste from the affected road sections within the available time so that the route can be handed back for reopening.

This is one reason why marathon-event cleaning requires careful manpower planning, transport, equipment preparation and communication between different working locations.

Successful marathon-event cleaning is therefore not just about the number of cleaners. It depends on having the right people, equipment and waste-control arrangements at the right locations and at the right time.
